Hegemonic masculinity
Masculinity has been a debate since last century,which arouses a lot of critics’and scholars’attention.There is no clear definition of masculinity till now.Some say masculinity has some weaknesses,holding the idea that the definition of masculinity essentializes the male features.Others think that the definition is based on the social gender ab-normalization of essentialization of female and male difference,but ignores the difference and exception of the classification of social gender.Meanwhile,just as the masculinity,the debates on race,gender,and sexuality of cultural,political social ideologies have been diversified.Different people have different ideas on such these topics.Through these two weeks of study and reading,I have deeper understanding on the topics of race,gender and sexuality and learn new knowledge of hegemony masculinity.
Hegemony masculinity has no clear definition as well,though studies on this topic has been diversified for a long time.Communication scholar Nick Trujilo puts forward five properties of hegemony masculinity as follows:1)physical force and control,2)occupational achievement,3)familial patriarchy,4)frontier manship,and 5)heterosexuality.With these five elements,people can have a better understanding on hegemony masculinity,as these elements basically analyzes hegemony masculinity from all kinds of aspects,including both the idea of“hegemony”and“masculinity”,such as physical force and control or familial patriarchy.
However,this week’s reading and study mainly refers to white masculinity.Just as what Nakayama’s article says,“the penetration of white masculinity into the dark underworlds of Asian and Asian-American(no distinction,of course,need be made in Hollywood)cultural spaces offers an illuminating opportunity to expose the excessive rhetorics”,the white masculinity,or hegemony masculinity,puts the system of social unequal gender,cultural construction,race,and class into considerations.Meanwhile,the spatial penetration are not only said to be metaphorical for those in critical studies from the perspectives of race,sexuality and social gender,but also gives rise to the dis-identification of relationship between hegemony masculinity and stereotypes,which is restricted to the pursuit of a clear image of hegemony masculinity or white masculinity.
At the same time,through these two weeks’modules,I start to know the ways of media reflecting race,gender and sexuality from the perspectives of culture,politics and society.With the development of science and technology,there are more and more effective ways of media to reflect the cultural,political and social ideologies.Film,for example,is one of the most effective and critical means of media used to express cultural,political and social ideologies.For example,by the means of film,Mickey Mouse Monopoly showed us some relations between masculinity,femininity,and hegemony by illustrating how Disney movies showcase stereotypical representations of gender.
Contemporary representations of Latina/os,not familiar to us at first,is easier for us to understand and comprehend for us after the study and reading of the module.The week’s article,written by Moreman and Calafell,gives readers a better understanding of the contemporary representations of Latina/os.Latina/os include Latina/o identity,latina/o gender and Latina/o nationality.By the analysis and explanation of the film Chasing Papi,the article connects the contemporary representations of Latin/os to the masculinity and feminity and thus provides readers a new perspective of Latino/os to some extent.
